**TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN**
GROUNDING OF SHIELDED CAT5e
This bulletin provides information regarding a specification change to the required CAT5e cable for connecting the Bell camera to the GRIDSMART Processor.
This bulletin is issued as guidance on how to achieve optimal performance while meeting best practice standards. Shielded CAT5e cable that is properly grounded can help mitigate the effects of electromagnetic interference(EMI) or radio frequency interference(RFI), in particularly, when the cable is located near high voltage wiring, radio transmitters, or when there are poor ground connections between the different pieces of equipment. Any system not currently experiencing operating challenges requires no action. Future installs MUST adhere to this standard.
Resolution: GRIDSMART updated the required solid core, burial grade, gel-filled CAT5e cable to a SHIELDED, burial grade, gel-filled CAT5e cable and ground the drain wire to the EPM ground lug.
How to effect this update if your GRIDSMART system is experiencing camera connectivity or image quality issues, we recommend inspecting the cable and the connection points. If the problem persists, replace the cable with a SHIELDED, burial grade, gel-filled CAT5e and ground the drain wire to the EPM ground lug.If you are already using a shielded CAT5e cable, please verify that the drain wire is attached to the EPM and earth ground for the EPM is 25 ohms or less resistance to ground. The EPM should be attached as close to the cabinet ground rod as possible. Do not attach the EPM ground wire to the cabinet or common ground panel. To properly ground the cable, connect the drain wire to the ground lug inside the EPM enclosure Only(see below). Do NOT connect the drain wire to the SMCH Junction Box ground. Only the EPM ground should be used. Connect the drain wire to the EPM ground lug using a ring terminal.
